GAME TYPOLOGY

WHAT IS THE GAME TO THE PLAYER?

THE GAME IS ALMOST ALWAYS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE PLAYER'S PERCEIVED EXPERIENCE

PLAYING & PARTICIPATING IN THE GAME and THE GAME'S OUTCOME IS IMPORTANT FOR THE ATHLETE.
As a coach qualifies and tracks participation minutes for players, performance, recovery, evaluations, it is important to remember the tenets below which qualify an event as an actual "game":
THE GAME IS THE INCUBATOR
THE GAME IS THE INCUBATOR:  The majority of a player's perception of their experience will be determined by the "game".
TRAINING IS THE MAJOR
TRAINING IS THE MAJOR:  The majority of an athlete's time spent will be spent training, almost 5:1 if periodized correctly.
THE GAME MUST INCLUDE CERTAIN STANDARDS
THE GAME MUST INCLUDE STANDARDS:  A game is qualified by the following:
  • A scheduled, planned event (not impromptu)
  • Fully Marked & Prepared Football Field
  • Teams in Uniforms
  • Time & Score are Kept/Tracked
  • Referee (full crew preferred, but one match official suffices)
SCRIMMAGES & INTRA SQUAD END GAMES DO NOT QUALIFY
SCRIMMAGING or INTRA SQUAD END GAMES:  These do not qualify as "game minutes played and participated in" for an athlete.  Utilizing the tenets above, we will meet these expectations on behalf of all athletes at all levels.   In turn, we will expect all athletes, at all levels of competitive, pro-am, and pro participation to understand the "playing time" expectations.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMPETITIONS CORRELATE TO PLAYING TIME EXPECTATIONS

Expectations of playing time are applicable in U9 thru U19 as described below.  All younger aged athletes (U8 and younger) should participate in at least 50% of all games.  Below are MINIMAL STANDARDS.  Coaches are encouraged to exceed minimum standards through proper rotation and roster management.  Standards are calculated by TOTAL MINUTES THE PLAYER IS AVAILABLE.   When a player misses for injury, illness or personal reason, these are not minutes calculated into the expectations below.

FRIENDLY GAMES: "non result oriented"
Description: Scrimmage intra-club (within program) or inter-club (outside opponent).
Minimal playing time per player standards:  60% of each match (except players who receive, or are anticipated to receive, over 50% of playing time in regular league matches).
LEAGUE GAMES: "result oriented"
Description: Regularly scheduled games inside a team's primary league platform.
Minimal playing time per player standards:
  • Home League Matches: 0% of minutes are guaranteed "per match"
  • Away League Matches (traveling over 100 miles from teams training site): 40% of minutes of each match
  • Average Minutes Per Season: 33% of minutes of total time played throughout the season

PROMOTION/RELEGATION LEAGUE GAMES: "impact match" (results prioritized)
Description: A league game whose result will impact a team's ability to "stay up" in their current level or "promote" to a higher level of league competition.
Minimal playing time per player standards:
  • Home or Away Promo/Rele League Matches: 0% of minutes are guaranteed "per match" (applicable to U13 and older, or U12 "playing up").
  • Average Minutes Per Season: 33% of minutes of total time played throughout the season should still avg. 33%
TOURNAMENT GAMES:  "result oriented";  Impact Varies from "showcase" to "result"
Description: Games played with an advancement to elimination rounds, in which a champion is recognized.
Minimal playing time per player standards:
  • Pool/Group Play Matches: 25% of minutes are guaranteed "per match"
  • Elimination Matches (which may reside inside of Group/Pool Play): 0% of minutes of each match whose result is consequential to the tournament outcome (once a team is eliminated from championship contention, then further consequences are only considered if they are part of a regional or national tournament pathway).  Not applicable to U12 and younger.
  • Travel Tournament Exception: 33% of minutes of total time played in the tournament, with an understanding that a player should play at least 50% of any match that is inconsequential to the tournament outcome.
POST SEASON TOURNAMENT: "impact match"
Description: National Championship pathways that progress from qualifier level (usually state) to regional, to national finals, applicable to U13 and older (or U12 teams "playing up").
Minimal playing time per player standards:
  • All Matches: 0% of minutes are guaranteed "per match" as long as match is consequential to team's pursuit of the Championship or Advancement to the "next round".
  • Matches of No Consequence to Advancement:  50% of playing time is expected.
  • Exceptions, Reserve Player Travel: Occasionally the club will send a reserve player who has been informed of her/his status as exclusively a "reserve" player.  This player may only participate if a player is injured, a need arises, or once the team is fully eliminated from contention to advance.  The "reserve" player is serving the team and club, often funded by the club, to help ensure success of the team's investment in the post season event.
SHOWCASE/ID GAMES: "exposure maximized"
Description: Matches scheduled for the purpose of scouting opportunities for players for pro, pro-am, college, national team, or other pathways.  There is no "team advancement" in these events.
Minimal playing time per player standards:
  • Showcase Matches: 50% of minutes are guaranteed "per match".
  • Exceptions: Less than 50% of minutes. Some players who normally play 75%+ minutes may have reduced minutes to help ensure opportunity for all teammates.  Some players who are already committed or may not benefit from the particular showcase may have reduced minutes.
