SUBSTITUTION

ManaginG ENTRY/EXIT

EXIT AS A CHAMPION.
ENTER AS A CHAMPION.

The coach should lead the following simple, powerful culture builders, when substitutions occur during the match.

These gestures are reminders of the "attitude" of The WSA Way.  These gestures also place emphasis on and require the athlete to maintain the attitude, culture, and signals towards being a FORCE OF FORTUNE.

It is important to note, that these gestures are "easy" when the game is going "favorably".  We are defined by our consistency of action, word, deed, and attitude, even in the face of adversity.  Lead right.  Be consistent.  Be persistent. And you will persevere.  And you will teach others to do the same.  CONSISTENT, PERSISTENT, PERSEVERING LEADERSHIP & FOLLOWERSHIP = THE WSA WAY.

WHaT THE COACH IS MANAGING & RESPONSIBLE TO

ENTERING PLAYER
1. PREP TIME:  Entering players at U13+ should be given time to physically prep.  The amount of time is dependent on the age, weather, and situation.  Generally speaking a minimum of 2 minutes of prep time, and ideally 4-5 minutes should be allocated. REWARMING: Players should be "re-warmed" at 20 minute intervals during the 1st & 2nd halves, if players do not enter earlier.

2. CONCISE INSTRUCTIONS:  Give the entering player concise instructions. This might be a reminder of the game tactic, or developmental focus.  It should include the position the player will play, and who the player will replace.

3. EMPOWER:  You have a brief moment to empower the athlete within The WSA Way, to be bold, claim the moment, serve the team, or any other directive of empowerment that helps advocate for the athlete's best performance.

EXITING PLAYER
1. GREET PLAYER:  The coach is responsible to greet every exiting player.  Make eye contact, give a fist bump or high five or some type of reinforcement to acknowledge the player's value (even if the player played poorly, or showed poor effort).  The player's inherent value needs to remain solid, unchanged, and a constant and when a player exits it is an opportunity to reinforce the player's value.   NOTE: Standing up shows respect and care - stand up to meet/greet the player.

2. CLARIFY IF NEEDED:  Each match is unique. If the player is being withdrawn at a time that is not normal (i.e. greatly reduced playing minutes) be sure to offer a quick explanation if it is not disciplinarily or performance based.  The athlete deserves to know. If the athlete is withdrawn for discipline or performance, be sure to indicate to athlete when you'll speak to her/him to explain if you cannot allocate time to this immediately.

3. TEACH IF TIME & FOCUS ALLOWS:  If time and focus allows, offer a quick teaching point. This could be reinforcing something the athlete did well, or reminding the athlete of a corrective measure, or offering a suggestion.   Remember all of the above will best register if you can formulate into a question, using the Socratic Method (i.e. "What did you see when you served the last service?" or "Do you know something you excelled at today?"  or "Do you remember one of the key focus points for you today?"
MULTI-TASK: MANAGE THE TEAM & THE GAME
Very importantly as coach you must maintain attention on the game and the participating athletes during each substitution.  In these moments of players entering and exiting, it is also important to "multi-task".

You should inform your athletes prior to game day that your attention during substitutions will remain with the game and the athletes on the field on behalf of the "team".  Prepare athletes for the culture builders above (how to enter and exit the field) to help create smooth transitions allowing you to maintain your focus on the team and game.

Your priority should always be the GAME & TEAM.  Teach your athletes to respect and honor this as part of The WSA Way - we are oriented towards belonging to something bigger than ourselves.   The enter/exit moment is an "individual" moment, the game is about the "team".

Maintain this focus and attention on the game and the team on the field consistently; even when you are winning or losing by wide margins. Do this even if the game outcome seems decided, or the outcome of the match is no longer important.

Your focus on the game models for your athletes an importance on details, on completing and finishing tasks, and on excellence.  You set the tone, and must breed this into your team's culture.   The "substitution" moment of a match is an opportunity for learning, and more important for reinforcing a culture of becoming, a culture of being excellently focused and prepared, and a focus on VALUING THE ATHLETE, THE PERSON.   This is The WSA Way.
