PLAYER PERSONALITIES

DIVERGENCE: Optimist vs PESSIMIST

Understanding differing player personalities and psychology produces a level of empathy required to lead,
connect, and engage with the athlete at the highest level. 
Not all players view the game the same. 
Not all player's view of the game is shared with the coach.   
The coach is responsible to adjust his/her view
​to meet the player's view, then lead, instruct, and facilitate growth.
OPTIMIST
At the extreme this player is always alert to capitalizing on opportunity to advance, attack, and score.  Sometimes as a byproduct this player is "waiting" for the "opportunity" because they are analyzing when and how that opportunity will unfold, and how they will take advantage and capitalize.  At the extreme this player will make an illogical run, that intersects the ball and leads to a goal.  It is a run that most would not have found worthwhile.  Understanding the player is an optimist, then the effort should be rewarded and not dismissed as luck.  The player has the "gift" of "selective foresight".  Celebrate this.  And at the tactical age of U14 onward, utilize this gift effectively. 
VS
PESSIMIST
At the extreme this player is constantly scouting the field for danger, and is aware and ready for any possible negative outcome.  This player is apt to find all the possible ways to protect and defend for his/her team, on the outlook for "what could go wrong".   This helps position the player for a great mindset towards defending, protecting, and organizing a defense against the opponent.  The player's personality  might also not produce a mindset that senses "opportunity" to execute in attacking moments.  So the player is a risk aversion, play it safe, keep it simple, be ready for the mistake type decision maker.  This may also come across in the player's communication, always communicating about what might go wrong.
