GUEST PLAYING

"If you want to go quickly, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together."

- George Bernard Shaw

THE WSA WAY IS PLAYER CENTERED

Player Centered means focus on the primary player outcomes of The WSA Way Game Model as a priority.  Leading young athletes through a paradigm of understanding responsibility to others, obligation to community, accountability to honoring commitments, is all a focus of The WSA Way's "Player-Centered" approach.

Lest we become warped, "Player-Centered" should never be used as a guise in the night, to create an avenue for abandoning commitment to team, responsibility to others, or consequences of our decisions.  This social responsibility will remain at the heart of The WSA Way.

At times this mantra, this non-negotiable tenet of The WSA Way, may create challenges to team-building, to winning, even to recruiting new players, or accepting new players from other teams/clubs. It may create challenges for the individual player who has unique wants and desires for opportunity to develop, experience, and play, that may conflict at times with the team's process, plan, or timeline.

Because of the challenge, we will not compromise the "value" of "team" and "serving others" and "honoring commitments".  And because we accept the challenge, embrace and lean into the challenge, we will become greater.

This is SERVANT CHARACTER development.  The Servant will Sacrifice.

GUEST PLAYING - WHAT IT IS
"GUEST PLAYING" is when a player is permitted by their primary team coach to play on "loan" with another team for a short, temporary interim period of time.

This is normally permitted when the guest playing does not interfere with the primary team's process, plans, games, and training.

Occasionally the "guest playing" opportunity may overlap with the primary team's schedule, but still be allowed (i.e. if the guest playing opportunity provides a unique 3-game experience in a prestigious event, and the opportunity requires the player to miss one of the primary team's scheduled training session, the coach may permit this absence for the unique opportunity presented to the player).

A player may "guest" play with another club or another team within the WSA Club.  (See below for league play, Clubwide Player Pass, or CPP, which is limited to players being shared within the WSA Club structure).

PRIMARY TEAM
"PRIMARY TEAM" is the team the player is rostered to and maintains a first commitment to throughout the entire seasonal year (Fall, Winter, Spring, early Summer).

This team will take precedent for all training sessions, games, and team activities in the case of any conflicts with participation on the player's assigned "secondary" or "guest/loan" team.
SECONDARY TEAM
"SECONDARY TEAM" is a team a player regularly, but on a part-time basis, will participate with during the course of a seasonal year.

Normally there is an agreed to and understood level of commitment to training and games, that is pre-orchestrated by athlete, and coaches of the athlete's primary and secondary team.
GUEST/LOAN TEAM
"GUEST/LOAN TEAM" is a team the athlete might participate with on a short term, interim basis only (i.e. for one event, or one game, or one weekend).

Participation on this team requires permission from the primary team's coach.

NOTE: WSA requires this permission when a WSA Team is the loaning team and when WSA is the receiving team.

It is important that in every case of "guest playing" whether for an event/tournament, or within league play (usually called "ClubWide Player Pass" (CPP) that the value of "team" is upheld, and that transparent, open, honest communication takes place. In EVERY CASE PERMISSION MUST BE SOUGHT BY THE PLAYER FROM THE PRIMARY TEAM COACH.   In any case that permission is not granted by a WSA Primary Team Coach, the athlete and family may, if needed, request intervention by club Director's of Coaching to help facilitate understanding, communication, and expectation.

CLUB WIDE PLAYER PASS (CPP) - WHAT IT IS
"CLUBWIDE PLAYER PASS" aka "CPP" is the vernacular used for times when a player participates in LEAGUE PLAY for another WSA Team.  CPP is usually limited by league rules, in terms of number, and player movement (i.e. which divisions of the league the player can move from and to).  This is similar to "Guest Playing" and might fit categorically under some of the policies regarding "guest playing", since the CPP is a "type of Guest Playing".

THE WSA WAY EXPECTATION FOR "GUEST PLAYING"

WSA Soccer embraces a PLAYER-CENTERED MODEL for player development, and club culture.

The WSA Way's Game Model primary player outcomes include "Servant Character".  This speaks directly to development of social responsibility, commitment to others, honoring commitments, and honoring one's word.

The player's PRIMARY TEAM is the player's priority, and the club reinforces this value through the opportunity that "guest playing" provides.

A player seeking "guest playing" opportunities either through a "guest/loan" team, or a "secondary team" should always be in clear, constant, and open communication with the player's primary team coach and staff.

The player should honor the primary team, and the player's responsibility to the primary team, the commitment given, the word given, and in spite of personal opportunity should not yield in honoring the primary team commitment.

The coach of the player seeking loan, should be open to the opportunity their athlete is seeking, and should weigh the importance of their own team's process, and the importance of the opportunity for one of their own athletes.

The coach of the player seeking loan, should NOT attempt to protect a player from potential recruiting exposure, and in turn reduce the player's playing opportunities.  It is not right for a coach to monopolize or claim ownership of any of their team's players.  The ONLY motivation for the coach in protection, should be in safeguarding the best interest of the team, the collective, as the other players on the team do matter.

Likewise the coach should never ignore the responsibility to protect, safeguard and manage their team to provide the provision of opportunity to a single player when it could be a detriment to the team.  The coach should LEAD, making RIGHT decisions, in spite of popularity, that advocate for the team's vision and mission.

The WSA Way embraces the opportunities that guest playing can provide in terms of experience, socialization, and development of the athlete.  The WSA Way directs athletes, coaches, and parents to engage in these opportunities with the right spirit, that there is a responsibility to the primary team, an obligation to honesty, and a commitment to care about a bigger picture than your "self" in these decisions.  This is part of being a team.  This is part of developing SERVANT CHARACTER.

The team should be willing to sacrifice for it's individual players, and each individual player should be willing to sacrifice for the team.  This is when The WSA Way Core Value #1 is truly reflected in our mindset and the manifestation is FAMILY.
