EVALUATING PLAYERS

"ASSESSING the footballer"

To WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS EXPECTED

" From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded;
and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked."

-- Luke 12:48

THE ART OF ASSESSING

ACKNOWLEDGE YOU DO NOT KNOW ALL, BE HUMBLE
RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH YOU ASSESS PLAYER
DETACH EMOTIONS & FEELINGS TO REMAIN OBJECTIVE/FAIR
UNDERSTAND THE LEVEL
OF YOUR TEAM
FORESEE  TEAM'S
SEASON ROSTER
RECEIVE & BE OPEN TO MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES
SEE THE FUTURE of
PLAYER & TEAM
CONSIDER THE ROLES
WITHIN YOUR TEAM
CONSIDER COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION & CONTEXT
Let us begin here.  You are far from perfect as a talent scout and evaluator.  Your "expertise" carries this irrefutable flaw - you cannot foresee the future, you are not all-knowing, you are in fact limited to "judge".   In addition to all of your limitations as "judge", there is this fact: the amazing human spirit (of athletes) continues to use sport to outdo previously perceived limits and constraints.  Quite simply, you do NOT KNOW, and you can NOT FOREKNOW at a high level.

However, you are required to ASSESS the footballer.  This is an
obligatory functional role of "coach" or "manager" of your squad.  This is commonly called "player evaluations".   Henceforth we will often refer to this as an assessment of the footballer.  To "evaluate" confers a strong connotation of "placing value" on a player.  The WSA Way requires us to VALUE each player first as a person, and foremost with the utmost respect and dignity, irrespective of the wholistic assessment of the playing attributes.  The vernacular distinction of "assessment vs evaluate" is simply a reminder of tenets of The WSA Way.

A player assessment is quintessential component of your relationship to your athletes.  When executed well it permits your best interactions with the athlete.  These assessments also are foundational to building your best team.  When you assess correctly, you assemble correctly, and you develop your GAME MODEL properly.  And your team performs closest to their ceiling.
ASSESS = the estimation of the nature, quality, or ability
